1: Overview
Use the Series Settings panel to define how data appears in your chart. You can adjust axis and legend placements, sort items, suppress results with low base sizes or values, and hide empty series.
To open the Series Settings panel, click any of the options in the Series Settings menu.
3: Warn for series with low base size
4: Hide series with low base size
5: Hide series with low result
2: Axis & Legend Entries
The Axis & Legend Entries section allows you to position questions, answers, splits, and intervals on either the axis or legend of your chart. This affects layout only, not the actual result.
1. Smart positioning: Automatically places items based on chart type and data. Smart positioning logic is applied by default. The algorithm is based on the number of questions, answers, filter splits, if interval is applied or not, and selected chart type. If you want to set your own position of the items, turn off the smart logic and move the items between and within the legend and axis box by drag and drop.
2. Axis: Select items here to show them as categories, i.e. appearing on the chart itself.
3. Transpose: Switches axis and legend entries.
4. Legend: Select items here to show them as data series, i.e. in the legend of the chart..
5. Move repeated texts to the legend heading: Toggles merging of repeated labels.
Tip: Click the eye icon to toggle visibility of items in the chart.
2.1: Axis & Legend Entries Example
The example below shows three different scenarios. In all these charts, the same question, answers and filter split are used , but they are positioned differently in each chart. The result is the same in each chart, as the Axis and Legend entries only affect the layout and not the calculations.
3: Sorting
Use the Sorting section to order the items displayed in the axis and legend by questionnaire order, value, or alphabetically. Sorting options appear based on the chart contents. If the legend contains only one item, no sorting controls appear for the legend; the same goes for the axis.
1. Sort axis by: Opens a dropdown where you can select how the axis items should be sorted (by value, alphabetical, questionnaire order, by other chart/table).
2. Axis sort direction: Choose whether to sort the axis items in ascending or descending order.
3. Sort legend by: Opens a dropdown to select the sorting method for legend items (by value, alphabetical, questionnaire order).
4. Legend sort direction: Choose whether to sort the legend items in ascending or descending order.
3.1: Sorting Example 1
In the example below, the chart includes one question in the legend and multiple answers along the axis. Since sorting isn't applicable to a single legend item, sorting controls appear for the axis only.
3.2: Sorting Example 2
In the example below, the legend displays two questions, and the axis shows multiple answers. Because sorting can now be applied to both areas, sorting controls are available for the axis and the legend.
Note: In this example, the axis items are sorted by value. Because the legend includes two items, an additional dropdown labeled Select legend item to base sorting on appears. This lets you define which series will be used as the basis for sorting.
4: Base Warning
Enable a warning when any series has a base below a defined threshold. You can specify whether the check applies to weighted or unweighted data.
If results are weighted, and the user has access to both weighted and unweighted data (as defined by the administrator), you can choose which base type to use for the low base size check.
You can also add a custom message to appear in the chart footer, this message is shown only when at least one series falls below the defined base size limit.
1. Enable warning: Toggle to turn on the warning for series with a low base size.
2. Limit: Set the minimum base size threshold; series below this value will trigger the warning.
3. Base type: Choose whether the warning should be based on weighted or unweighted data.
4. Warning message: Enter the message that will appear when a series falls below the defined base size.
4.1: Base Warning Example
In this example, the limit is set to 40, so any series with a base size below 40 will display a low base size warning.
In the chart you can see that for Wave 1, the base is 37, so an asterisk appears, and there is a low base warning message in the footer.
5: Base Suppression
Suppress data series below a certain base size. This works in the same way as the base warning, except that the data is suppressed.
You can also decide whether to keep or remove their labels in the axis/legend.
1. Enable hiding: Toggle to activate hiding of series with a base size below the defined limit.
2. Limit: Set the minimum base size required; series below this threshold will be hidden.
3. Axis/Legend text: Choose whether to leave or remove the labels for hidden series from the axis and legend.
4. Base type: Select whether the base check should use weighted or unweighted values.
5. Hidden series message: Enter the message that will be shown in the chart footer when series are hidden due to low base size.
5.1: Base Suppression Example
In this example, the limit is set to 30, so all series with a base size below 30 are hidden. On the left, the axis labels for the hidden series are retained; on the right, those labels are removed from the chart.
6: Result Suppression
With this setting you can hide series with values below a specified result limit. Choose whether the suppression is based on result values (e.g. percentages) or respondent counts.
1. Enable hiding: Toggle to activate hiding of series with results below the specified threshold.
2. Result type: Select whether the hiding condition is based on result values or respondent counts.
3. Axis/Legend text: Choose whether to leave or remove labels for hidden series in the axis and legend.
4. Hidden series message: Enter the message that appears in the chart footer when a series is hidden due to low result.
6.1: Result Suppression Example
In this example, all series with a result below 8 are hidden from the chart.
In this example, you can see that the series for Bungee Jumping has been suppressed because the result for it is less than 10%.
Note: If the selected calculation type is percentage share, you can choose to hide series based on the respondent count rather than the percentage value.
7: Hide Empty Series
You can use these options to hide series that contain no data. All three can be enabled at the same time, depending on your chart setup:
1. Hide date gaps: Removes intervals (such as weeks or months) that don’t contain any data. This option is available only when the chart includes intervals. See Example 1 below.
2. Hide empty series: Hides splits and answer options with no results (e.g., count = 0). See Example 2 below.
3. Hide splits with No Data: Removes filter split options that contain no data. This option is available only when filter splits are used in the chart. See Example 3 below.
7.1: Hide Empty Series Example 1
In the chart below, intervals are displayed along the x-axis, and every second interval contains no data. In the left chart, Hide date gaps is turned off, so all intervals, including those without data, are shown. In the right chart, Hide date gaps is turned on, and the empty intervals are hidden.
7.2: Hide Empty Series Example 2
Some answer options in the chart have results of 0%. In the left chart, Hide empty series is turned off, so those series are still visible. In the right chart, Hide empty series is turned on, and the series with 0% results are hidden.
7.3: Hide Empty Series Example 3
The chart uses Age group as a filter split, and the 25–34 age group has no respondents. In the left chart, Hide splits with No Data is turned off, so the 25–34 series is still displayed. In the right chart, Hide splits with No Data is turned on, and the series is hidden.
