In this article
It is possible to specify if answers should be excluded from the percentage calculations or not. This provides a better alternative to cleaning or recoding data in order to exclude certain answers from the calculations.
This is an Answer block level setting, meaning once it is defined, it is then applied to all questions which share the same Answer block.
The exclusion logic is applied to all percentage calculations in:
- StoryTeller
- StoryCreator
- Crosstable tool
Respondents that answer with only an excluded answer are therefore excluded from the base size.
Setup
To exclude an answer from percentage calculations:
Go to the Answer block view.
Specify the answers to be excluded in the column "Exclude from Percentage".
The column in the Answer block page used to exclude an answer from the percentage calculation. “Don’t know” is excluded in this example.
In StoryCreator, the answer is still shown but it is not selectable. This also applies to the StoryTeller and Crosstable tools.
StoryCreator, when viewing the answer list of a question with an excluded answer (“Don’t know”).
Examples
Example 1
Q1 is a single choice question.
"Don't know" is excluded from the percentage calculation.
The result of answer "5" becomes 3/7*100=43%.
Respondents 5, 9 and 10 are not included in base as they only answered "Don't know"
Example 2
Q2 is a multi-choice question.
"Other" is excluded from the percentage calcuation.
The result of answer "Volvo" becomes 3/8*100=38%.
Respondents 5 and 7 are excluded from the base size, as they only answered "Other".
Respondents 3 and 6 are included, as they provided more answers than just "Other".
